frequently asked questions:

Q: What steps has Canopy Verde taken to be more environmentally responsible?

A: Behind Canopy Verde’s “modern meets earth-friendly” principle is the concept of combining modern design with an environmentally friendly approach. To achieve this, we thought carefully about each step of the process, from design to manufacturing to packaging. In selecting the raw material for the collection, we scoured the fabric market in China and exhausted our local contacts to find certified suppliers of eco-friendly fabrics.

For the first season, we used a blend of organic cotton and bamboo for the main material and lining. The leather is chrome-free (see question below for more information). The dyeing process is also certified by OEKO-TEX, an independent European organization, that no harmful chemicals and substances were used. The embroidery thread is free of AZO, a harmful chemical. We also used recycled plastic from a local supplier for the packaging. As much as possible, we try to use FSC-certified and recycled paper in our business correspondence and marketing material.

Each season we will be evaluating our processes and taking steps to further minimize our ecological footprint.

Q: What is chrome-free leather and how is it eco-friendly?

A: Most leather makers use heavy metals like chrome to process animal skin into durable leather. The use of chrome, however, leads to toxic contamination of our air, water, and soil. Chrome-free leather removes this harmful component to minimize the damaging effect on the environment, yet still preserves the soft feel and texture of supple leather.

Q: What are the benefits of organic cotton over conventional cotton?

A: There are numerous benefits of going organic when it comes to cotton. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides. These chemicals pollute the environment, harm the health of workers on these farms, and negatively impact soil fertility in the long term. In terms of personal health, there is also evidence that the chemicals in conventional cotton can seep into the skin.

Q: Where are the bags produced?

A: Canopy Verde bags are made in China. Given founder Linda Wong’s Chinese roots and her upbringing in Taiwan, it was a deliberate choice to manufacture in China and work to encourage local manufacturers to be more environmentally responsible.

Q: How do I clean Canopy Verde bags?

A: We recommend spot cleaning only. Please note that because of the earth-friendly nature of the dyeing process, darker colors may transfer to lighter colors.
